Performing

  • Apply musical knowledge and skills to perform salient styles and genres of music.
  • Perform significant works from a variety of significant composers and styles in the Western music tradition, including Medieval, Renaissance, Baroque, Classical, Romantic, Twentieth Century, and Contemporary periods, as well as jazz, popular, and world music.
  • Perform with a tone quality, intonation, rhythmic accuracy, dynamic control, articulation, and expressiveness that are appropriate for the instrument and musical style.
  • Apply appropriate knowledge and performance skills to rehearsing and performing in ensembles.
  • Describe basic information about health and safety within the contexts of practice, performing, teaching, and listening; topics will include hearing, vocal, and musculoskeletal health and injury prevention.
  • Demonstrate conducting knowledge and skills in instrumental and vocal settings.
  • Hear, notate, analyze, and perform music through aural skills and sight-reading.
  • Demonstrate basic proficiency on the piano.

Knowing

  • Identify, analyze, and contextualize the elements of music in a given composition.
  • Develop an understanding of compositional processes, aesthetic properties, and artistic, social, and historical context.
  • Identify significant composers, works, and styles in the Western music tradition, and trace the evolution of musical styles through the Medieval, Renaissance, Baroque, Classical, Romantic, Twentieth Century and Contemporary periods, including jazz, popular, and world music.
  • Develop an expanded global awareness and cultural understanding through musical study.
  • Develop effective writing skills for use in program notes, abstracts, essays, and research papers.
  • Respond critically to a performance.

Creating

  • Compose and improvise in a variety of styles and genres.
  • Compose music that is expressive and displays creativity and idiomatic awareness of style and orchestration.
  • Develop an individual compositional voice or style that reflects an awareness of prevalent musical styles and techniques of the 20th and 21st centuries.
  • Present new works for live performers that are well-prepared, demonstrating a high level of individual preparation through engaging in proper rehearsal and performance techniques with collaborating performers.
  • Using Notation software produce musical scores, including informative program notes.
  • Perform and improvise on an instrument as a soloist or in an ensemble, with technical proficiency.

Teaching

  • Apply musical skills and pedagogies to teaching music in a variety of contexts.
  • Demonstrate application of pedagogy and instructional methods as they pertain to choral, instrumental, and general music education.
  • Exhibit knowledge of current issues and trends in music education and education.
  • Demonstrate the ability to utilize technology for music teaching and learning.
  • Meet the standards articulated in the Washington State Board of Education’s standards, including the professional teaching standards and the music content area standards.
